CAVERLY AWARD

Since 1984, the Ernest R. Caverly Award has been presented to Brookline educators in recognition of professional achievements and contributions to the Brookline Public Schools. Two awards are given annually: one to a high school educator and one to an elementary school educator. The educators receiving the awards are designated as Ernest R. Caverly Associates in recognition of their dedication to the ideals of Dr. Ernest R. Caverly, a distinguished public school leader, educator, and Brookline Schools Superintendent (1931–1964).

In 2008, the Brookline Education Foundation was proud to honor the following outstanding exemplars of Excellence in Teaching:

ALICIA HSU

“In a world filled with louder voices and bigger egos,” Alicia Hsu, is, according to a fellow educator, “an unsung hero.” In her 22 years of teaching in Brookline, 20 at the Lawrence School, Hsu has demonstrated dedication to empowering students to succeed academically and to educating the next generation of Brookline teachers.

In the words of Lawrence colleagues, “The high achievement and welfare of her students drives everything she does in her teaching.” She is a “master” at differentiated instruction, teaching “with one eye focused on the many different learning styles in her class.” Hsu also is committed to helping to educate fledgling teachers, welcoming an intern or student teacher into her classroom each year while often also mentoring a new staff member.

ELLEN LEWIS

Ellen Lewis, who has taught English at Brookline High School for 31 years and is a celebrated BHS volleyball coach, is described by colleagues as “MVP of the English Department” and a department “setter” who “controls the team on the court and sets up every play so that the hitters can do their job.”

Renowned for extending herself in countless ways to students, colleagues, and the school, Lewis has served regularly on the Department Hiring Committee, worked tirelessly on new curriculum, and “acted as official and unofficial mentor to more new teachers in the department than anyone else.” Fellow teachers praise her prodigious preparation and ability to reach students of all abilities, and note that, “regardless of course or level, her teaching reflects flat-out delight in students and curriculum.…”
