CAVERLY AWARD

Since 1984, the Ernest R. Caverly Award has been presented to Brookline educators in recognition of professional achievements and contributions to the Brookline Public Schools. Two awards are given annually: one to a high school educator and one to an elementary school educator. The educators receiving the awards are designated as Ernest R. Caverly Associates in recognition of their dedication to the ideals of Dr. Ernest R. Caverly, a distinguished public school leader, educator, and Brookline Schools Superintendent (1931–1964).

In 2007, the Brookline Education Foundation was proud to honor the following outstanding exemplars of Excellence in Teaching:

Eleanor Demont, who began teaching in 1981, came to Brookline ten years later. She has taught first, second, and third grades and currently teaches fifth grade at Heath School. The many letters supporting her nomination describe her superlative teaching talents. “Eleanor makes it possible for all children to grow, develop, and achieve at high levels.”  “She creates an exciting and creative atmosphere where students of all abilities feel challenged and inspired.”   She is an exceptional educational leader, a collaborative teacher and community builder.”  A former student shares that, even ten years later, she still uses what Ms. Demont taught her - skills to build community, enthusiasm for the learning process, and the ability to “dive headfirst into the unknown - a great teacher’s lasting legacy.”

Marilyn Kelly Chetwynd began her career as an English teacher in 1970 and has been working in Brookline since 1990. In nominating her, colleagues, parents, and students spoke of her skill in her various roles at Brookline High School’s Winthrop House, including English teacher, Learning Disabilities teacher, Job Coach, Coordinator of Special Programs and Work Study, and Head Teacher and Advisor. She “combines a passion for learning and helping others learn, with a commitment to helping our most afflicted and damaged students.” “[Ms. Chetwynd] has a remarkable capacity to cross barriers of age, race, culture, gender, disability... to reach students who are masterful at keeping others at a distance.”
