Systemwide grants
Systemwide grants support growth and innovation in the system as a whole. Systemwide grants are announced in the fall and may be renewed to provide funding over a three-year period. Smaller leadership grants have traditionally been used to provide continuing education and professional development opportunities to principals, curriculum coordinators, and other administrators. Systemwide grants are developed and administered in collaboration with the Superintendent of Schools and his staff.

2007–2008

During the 2007–2008 school year, the Brookline Education Foundation will fund over $54,000 in Systemwide grants in the following areas:

EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES

  1. The Brookline Educational Equity Project seeks to close the unacceptable achievement gaps that exist between students of different racial and ethnic groups in our schools. The Brookline Education Foundation funded the planning and launch phases (FY04-06) and has continued funding participation in MSAN (Minority Student Achievement Network) conferences
  2. The Math Professional Development Initiative focuses on three crucial areas identified in Phase I of Mathematics Program Review: K-6 teacher knowledge of math content, collaborative coaching, and assessment.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP GRANTS

  1. The Foundation is providing funding for facilitators to guide the Brookline Public School’s Strategic Planning Process.
  2. The Superintendent's Fund supports the superintendent’s professional development, including participation in national conferences of school administrators and MSAN leadership.
  3. Training in Use of Data will provide a series of seminars in the use and analysis of data for administrators. This will fill a lacuna in the background of many administrators, enabling them to use data more effectively.
  4. Assessment Professional Development provides training and mentoring for curriculum coordinators in developing district-wide grade-level assessments in all subject areas.
  5. Professional Development for Principals and Coordinators enables the BPS Director of Professional Development & Special Initiatives to provide professional development opportunities to principals and coordinators in the face of recent cutbacks in grant opportunities for these activities.
  6. The Principals' Fund funds professional development for principals, including an annual retreat and mentoring for new principals.
  7. Teacher Diversity Training provides training for 2nd/3rd year teachers to support and engage students from culturally diverse backgrounds.  This program is a specific action of the Equity Project.
  8. BEF Practitioners' Colloquium is planned as an opportunity for Brookline educators to share their grant work and projects with colleagues.
  9. The annual ScienceFest promotes science education, especially at the elementary level, and fosters community participation in stimulating interest in science.
