Celebrating Teachers is a special opportunity for the Brookline Education Foundation and members and supporters of the Brookline Public Schools to voice our gratitude for the enthusiasm, dedication, and professionalism of all Brookline educators. In this, our 27th year of service, we also celebrate the Foundation's continuing role as a significant resource and effective advocate in support of educational excellence and innovation in the Brookline Public Schools.

This year's Caverly Award winners were announced at our May 20th Celebrating Teachers at Newbury College in Brookline. They are Alicia Hsu, who teaches third grade at the Lawrence School, and Ellen Lewis, who teaches English at Brookline High School.

Teacher, collaborative, and systemwide grants and awards totaling over $285,000 also were announced at Celebrating Teachers. These funds will support activities at all Brookline schools, from pre-school through grade 12, during the 2008-09 school year.

The Robert I. Sperber Award for Administrative Leadership was presented to Dr. Robert Weintraub, Headmaster at Brookline High School, at a reception on Sunday, May 4. This award honors an educator who evinces both excellence in administrative management and strong leadership skills that have brought about positive improvement in the school system. These are ideals that Dr. Sperber, who was Superintendent of Schools from 1964 to 1982, espoused and practiced.

Bob Weintraub has served as an administrator at Brookline High School for 19 years, 3 as Assistant Headmaster, one as Acting Headmaster, and 15 as Headmaster. According to colleagues, “he is an energetic leader who dreams big, who takes calculated risks, and who knows how to get things done in schools.” Under his leadership, Brookline High School has experienced "dramatic and positive changes which have bolstered its reputation as a flagship public high school.” Another colleague notes that the quality that makes Weintraub a powerful and effective leader "is his absolutely indefatigable spirit: he loves life, he loves kids, and indeed, he loves education because it’s the best way he knows to open doors to that life he loves.” The Brookline Education Foundation is proud to honor Bob Weintraub as the 2008 Sperber Award winner.

Additional information about the Robert I. Sperber Award and Dr. Robert Weintraub is available under Awards.

Todd Saker Fund supports Author visit to all schools

This spring, the Todd Saker Fund co-sponsored a visit to all Brookline elementary schools by Mitali Bose Perkins, a prolific author of fiction that focuses on the lives of young people born or raised in a culture other than that of their parents. Some of Ms. Perkins' recent publications include Monsoon Summer, a Bank Street Best Book for Children, and The Not-So-Star-Spangled Life of Sunita Sen, an ALA Book for Reluctant Readers.

To enable visits to all eight elementary schools, school PTOs and Friends of the Library groups provided financial support to complement the Saker fund monies.
