Annual Report

The Board of Directors of the Brookline Education Foundation presents this report of the BEF’s activities for the fiscal year that began on July 1, 2015 and ended on June 30, 2016.

Since 1981, BEF grants and programs have been powerful tools for innovation and excellence in teaching and learning in Brookline classrooms. The BEF committed over $260,000 to funding for its grants and program-related activities for the 2015-16 school year. We anticipate that funding for the 2016-17 school year will exceed this amount by approximately $15,000.

Teacher Grants - The BEF approved $32,000 in Teacher Grant funding for sixteen grants directly benefiting twenty-six teachers and specialists for the 2015–16 school year.  See FY16 Grants.  See FY17 Grants.

Collaborative Grants - Collaborative Grant funding totaling over $70,477 was awarded for the 2015–16 school year to support ten grants that directly involve more than sixty educators and hundreds of their students.  See FY16 Grants.  See FY17 Grants.

Systemwide Grants - In the past year, the BEF supported seven Systemwide Grants totaling $53,173.  See FY16 Grants.  See FY17 Grants.

Idea Lab -  In the Fall of 2016, the BEF awarded eleven Idea Lab grants involving thirteen Brookline educators and totaling over $8,000. See Idea Lab Grants

Awards and Endowed Programs - The Brookline Education Foundation sponsors several awards and endowed programs that honor individuals and enhance educational experiences for teachers and students.

• The Ernest R. Caverly Award is presented annually to one elementary and one high school teacher in recognition of professional excellence and contributions to the Brookline Public Schools. The 2016 recipients are Janice Gaudette, a Devotion School Therapeutic Learing Center teacher, and Jill Sifantus, an Biology teacher at Brookline High School.  More

• The Adam Russell Gelfand Fellows Program recognizes the recipient(s) of an outstanding Teacher Grant each year. This year’s Fellowship is awarded to Baker School 4th grade teacher Alyssa Henry, who will travel to Costa Rica with other educators to learn about the diverse ecosystems of the rainforest and its impact on the history, culture, and traditions of the people.  More

• The Charlie Baker Legacy Award was created to provide funding for a grant for continuing education, travel, program development, or other similar pursuits in the area of US History and/or World Geography. This year’s award is presented to Brookline High School social studies teacher, Elizabeth Buhl, who will participate in the prestigious “Freedom Writers Institute,” which trains teachers to use writing and project-driven activities to encourage the academic and personal growth of students.  More

• Through the Todd Saker Fund, the BEF helps to support an annual visit to Brookline schools by a noted author of children’s books.   More

• The BEEP Opportunity Fund once again funded weekly yoga, music, and dance programs in all BEEP classrooms through the generous support of the Trust Family Foundation. This fund seeks to provide enrichment and learning opportunities of our school system's youngest students.

• The Jay K. Fund, thanks to the generosity of the Kochi Foundation and the family of Jay K. Kochi, targeted teacher and professional learning in the areas of project based learning and technology integration in the 2015-16 school year. The Kochi Fund’s overarching goal is to improve student learning and engagement in STEM content areas.

In April, 2016, the BEF celebrated it 35th year supporting the Public Schools of Brookline with an anniversary gala and auction. Thanks to the continued generosity of our many supporters, we raised over $600,000 this year. Additional funds raised by our 35th Anniversary Gala and Auction will allow us to increase the impact of our grants and programs in the 2016-17 school year. Funds raised by our Fund-A-Need paddle will support a mentoring and leadership program for new principals, headmaster, and administrators.

Spelling Bee - The BEF hosted its 19th Annual Spelling Bee in March. Forty-eight fifth grade students, representing all eight Brookline schools participated.

Local Businesses - We are extremely grateful to the following local businesses and foundations that made donations to the BEF this year, many through sponsorships and donations to our 35th Anniversary Gala and Trivia Bee.  Please show your appreciation by frequenting these businesses.
