SUMMARY:Trivia Bee - Canceled
DESCRIPTION:BEF Trivia Bee and Raffle Canceled\nDue to the COVID-19 closures and community safety measures\, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this important fundraiser. We really had hoped that life will return to normal and we can all come together to celebrate our community and our teachers. Our goal was to raise over $100\,000 at this event. Thanks to our generous Sponsors and amazing\, trivia-hungry community\, we had already raised over half of our goal. \nWe know\, however\, that many Brookline families are facing dramatic changes in their circumstances during this time. If you remain able to donate these funds\, we will be most grateful\, and we will switch the ticket or raffle purchase to a fully tax-deductible donation. All donations from this event will go directly to fund our grant programs. If you would like to receive a refund for either tickets or raffle tickets\, please contact Elizabeth_ascoli@brooklineeducation.org before May 15\, 2020. \nWe also would like to deeply thank all of our Event Sponsors\, and thank you for your support during these challenging times. \n

SUMMARY:5th Grade Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Brookline Education Foundation 5th Grade Spelling Bee took place on Sunday\, March 10\, 2019. \nThe first place winner in our March 2019 Spelling Bee was Owen Bergstein from Pierce School. The winning word was “supercilious.” \nCongratulations to our winner and to all the students who participated in our Bee! \nHow does the Children’s Spelling Bee work? \nThe Children’s Spelling Bee is an “old-fashioned” spelling bee with the spellers taking turns\, each spelling a different word. Once a speller misspells one word\, he or she is out of the Bee. Prizes are awarded to the winners and each speller receives a certificate for participating. For details on how the Bee works\, see Spelling Bee Rules and Procedures.

SUMMARY:Tales From The Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 4th\, at 6pm to hear from our thoughtful 2019 Metzger Fellows: Mireille Blau\, Coolidge Corner School; Paul Epstein\, Brookline High School; Rebecca Hayden\, Brookline High School; Evan Mousseau\, Brookline High School; Lauren Ockene\, Pierce School; Emily Stewart\, Districtwide Music; and Meghan Walsh\, Runkle School. \nMargaret Metzger (1945-2013) taught English at Brookline High School for over forty years\, influencing thousands of students and educators through her teaching\, writing\, and mentoring. She was a 2005 recipient of the BEF’s Ernest R. Caverly Award for Excellence in Teaching. \nMargaret’s impact on education continues to be enormous. In honor of her life and achievements\, the BEF has established the Margaret Metzger Fellowship Fund to support a fellowship grant program for at least 3 to 5 years. \nThe Margaret Metzger Fellowship will create grants to support the continuation of Margaret’s work: thinking about the classroom\, writing about teaching\, and furthering the art of educating young people. In this time of frequent testing\, Margaret’s belief in education as transformative and rigorous is more important than ever. \nPlease let us know if you’re coming! \nClick here to watch a video of our 2018 Metzger Fellowship event. \nIf you would like to continue Margaret’s inspiring legacy and help further her mission to show that “education is sacred\,” please DONATE NOW to the Margaret Metzger Fellowship Fund. Kindly indicate that your donation is for the Margaret Metzger Fellowship within the box titled “MY DONATION IS IN HONOR/MEMORY OF” on the “review your donation” page.
